Lupine In A Nutshell…
From the very first collar more than 20 years ago, founders Scott Badger, Dave Jensen and Valerie Jensen have committed themselves and their business to ensuring that Lupine adheres to three core principles every day:
Do One Thing Very Well – We decided at the very beginning to focus on making the best collars and leads possible, period.
Insist on Quality - Here at Lupine, we consistently strive to improve the quality of our products and services we provide to our retailers and consumers.
Give Back – We live and work in a wonderful community. It just feels right when we can help our friends and neighbors, whether they have two legs or more!
To see how it all began, please take the time to look through the timeline below.
On 8/8/88, a litter of eight wolf-hybrid puppies was born. Lupine means “wolf-like.” Eight weeks later, one of these little fuzz balls came home with Scott. Eight pairs of shoes later, Blaze started going to work with Scott at one of the video stores he owned with Dave…
At the time, Valerie worked for a local mountaineering equipment manufacturer. When brand new patterned webbing arrived from France, she decided that Blaze needed a collar that suited his wild nature. That first collar was a big hit, receiving many compliments and queries of ‘Where did you get that?’ We decided to make some collars and leads to sell at the video stores and local pet shops.
After 2 years Dave, Valerie and Scott set out to design their own patterns. Working with graph paper and colored pencils, early designs drew inspiration mostly from geometric forms. Shortly thereafter, Lupine started working with an internationally acclaimed webbing designer. Her artistic skills and vision continue to set Lupine apart from all other collar and lead companies.
The business grew quickly. Valerie, Scott and Dave found keeping up with the demands of their thriving business by themselves to be quite a challenge. Hiring some great people remedied the situation and allowed them to get some sleep.
From the beginning, Lupine replaced damaged items, no questions asked. It dawned on us that we could make everyone’s life easier (including Rover’s) if we clearly stated that we understood that puppies chew and that could mean bad news for the Lupine piece in question. Thus, the phrase GUARANTEED (Even If Chewed)® was coined and became the cornerstone of the Lupine brand! So, thanks to the wonderful way you, our customers, have told your family and friends about our customer service and quality products, Lupine has continued to grow ever since.
Scott, Val and Dave are still friends and business partners. Lupine now makes thousands of collars, leads and harnesses every day in dozens of patterns and a rainbow of colors. The team has grown to more than 75 and the “Even if Chewed” Guarantee is still the hallmark of our brand.
We are happy to be able to live and work here in the beautiful Mount Washington Valley and to send our products to customers all over the country and around the world. So…a big Thank You from everyone at Lupine!
